Skin Layers

Suman's Facial Sculpting Skin Layers Explained

1. The Epidermis is the thin outer layer of the skin, and contains two primary types of cells, which are responsible for the structure, barrier functions, and skin color. Keratinocytes are the cells that create structure and barrier functions. These functions include hydration, creating new skin cells, and protection from ultraviolet rays, bacteria and chemicals. Melanocytes create melanin, which provides your skin with its beautiful color.

2. The Dermis is the middle layer, and contains collagen, elastin and Hyaluronic Acid. Collagen is the protein that makes skin strong and resilient, and elastin provides elasticity and firmness. Hyaluronic Acid supports collagen and elastin. The Dermis also contains blood and lymph vessels, hair follicles, sweat glands, fibroblasts, nerves and sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands create sebum, which is oily, so it lubricates your hair follicles.

3. The Subcutaneous Fat Layer conserves heat and protects from injury. It is the deepest layer of the skin, consisting of collagen, fat cells, blood vessels and tissue. This layer also acts as a “highway” between your skin and muscles, allowing nerves and vessels to do their job. Pretend those nerves and vessels are cars driving along the “highway”! Another important factor of the Subcutaneous Fat Layer - storing energy.

Weakened and Treated Skin Layers Diagram

There's a big difference between weakened skin layers and treated skin layers.

These diagrams show the skin layers we've been talking about - the Epidermis and the Dermis - and their inner workings. You can clearly see the improvement with the treated skin layers, how everything is packed tightly together, creating good structure. This treated structure allows the skin layers to do their job in the highest quality possible.

This is why we take our time here at the spa to provide you with services and products that will treat your skin layers from the inside, building up structure, giving your skin its beautiful strength, firmness and function.
